    Foles is....

NOT automatically dismissed as a possible QB for Chip Kelly.

Chip Kelly to the Eagles - NFC East Blog - ESPN

With the news that former Oregon coach Chip Kelly has been hired as the new head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, attention now turns to the most important issue facing the team in 2013: Who will play quarterback?

Some have assumed, based on the fact that Kelly ran a speed-based option offense in college, that hiring Kelly would increase the chances that the team keeps Michael Vick. After all, Vick is a running quarterback in the mold of the guys who've played for Kelly at Oregon, while Foles is more of a pocket guy who doesn't get outside the pocket and throw on the run. Simplistically, you can see how this makes sense.

But I don't think it necessarily does. First, there are the financial consequences of keeping Vick on the roster at his scheduled base salary of $15.5 million for 2013. The Eagles can get out of the contract scot-free if they cut him by Feb. 6. Vick has said he won't renegotiate for a lower salary. But with that deadline coming up it's possible he could change his mind. Depends whether Kelly wants him around, most likely.

I just don't think it's fair to assume that he does. First of all, if you're an intelligent NFL organization, you don't hire Chip Kelly because you like his dazzling, speed-based offense. You hire him because you believe him to be a nimble offensive mind who would have the wisdom to identify the best way to win in his new league with his new personnel and design an offense based on that. I personally believe Kelly fits the latter description and is smart enough to know that he's not going to win in the NFL the same way he won at Oregon, where he could recruit the fastest guys in the world and opposing defenses didn't have equivalent speed with which to counter it. Opposing defenses in the NFL are considerably faster than they are in the Pac 12. Considering what the Eagles are likely paying Kelly to change his mind and take the job a week and a half after turning it down, they'd better not be going all-in on the assumption that his college offense will translate to the pros.

Secondly, Vick isn't what he used to be. He's going to be 33 years old when the 2013 starts, which is three years older than he even was when he was running like crazy and putting up all kinds of points for the Eagles in 2010. To rely on Vick's speed as the basis for the offense is a mistake, and truth be told it's one of the mistakes that just got Andy Reid fired from this same job. The idea behind the Eagles' offense the last two years was that they had enough speed on offense with Vick, LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin to outrun people and operate dynamically. It didn't work, and a big part of the reason why is that Vick never developed his ability to read defenses, change protections and call the right audibles at the line. Vick's problem the last couple of years wasn't his ability to run -- it was his inability to make correct decisions, as well as his inability to protect the ball and keep himself healthy. It's hard to believe that's going to get any better under Kelly than it was under Reid. Especially as Vick ages and slows down.

And then there's this: Kelly knows Foles from coaching against him when Foles was at Arizona, and it's possible he really likes him. Here's a story from the Tucson Citizen in 2011 in which Kelly gushes over Foles:

Ill tell you what; Im glad Nick Foles is graduating, Oregon coach Chip Kelly said after his teams 56-31 victory Saturday night.

I catch myself watching him in awe sometimes. Nick is a hell of a football player. That kids a warrior. Hes as good as anyone in the country.
So if he wasn't blowing smoke there, it's possible Kelly's excited about the idea of Foles as his new quarterback and is planning to design an offense around him that doesn't necessarily match up with the offense he ran in college.

It's also possible he has something else in mind -- that the Eagles could draft a quarterback such as West Virginia's Geno Smith with that No. 4 overall pick they have. Or that he has someone in mind as a trade or free-agent target.

I just think people who are assuming Vick stays now because Kelly will want a quarterback who runs around are making a mistake. I think it's more complex than that.

On the surface Chip going to Eagles doesn't look good for Fole's prospects with the Eagles, however I do agree that the Eagles are probably looking for someone younger (and not as expensive) to play quarterback. Anything is possible, but I would not be surprised at all if Foles is the starter opening day next year for the Eagles.

One of my first thoughts after hearing Chip was hired at the Eagles was what impact it would have on Foles. I guess only time will tell.

Keep in mind that the Patriots have installed elements of Oregon's offense in their offense this year and Tom Brady is a pocket passer. Up-tempo doesn't necessarily mean the QB has to be a great runner.

This could be amazing for Chiefs fans. With Andy Reid in KC, I'd put money on a trade with Philly. Hell, I may actually renew my season tickets!

This is a great point. Chip Kelly is a mastermind when it comes to offense. He will adjust to the NFL. He's not going to run the read option the way he did at Oregon. He'll probably have some read option plays but I think a lot of it will be fast paced, he'll do his two point conversion stuff, he'll fake extra points, he'll go for it on 4th .. But I do not believe he absolutely needs a Mariota or a Vick to do damage.

I know that he'll need an O-Line that's 100x better if he wants a guy like Foles to run a read-option offense. If Philly doesn't make any changes, we'll be looking at David Carr v2.0

Why would the Chiefs get Foles when they could get Ricky Stanzi ( a clearly superior option, Cawk where you at?)

Here's what Chip Kelly had to say about his offensive philosophy and about Nick:

"Part of what we do offensively has always been understanding what personnel is, how we maximize that and what are their best traits? If you're going to ask somebody something they're not capable of doing, obviously that's a recipe for disaster. We're going to analyze everybody in our program. Our scheme offensively, defensive and special-teams wise is always going to be personnel-driven."

    — That's good news for Nick Foles. As was Kelly's response to a question about the rookie quarterback who replaced Michael Vick this past season.

"I'm a huge fan of his," said Kelly, whose teams faced Foles in college. "He's tough. It's an attribute that I think a lot of people don't understand how hard it is and what toughness means to the quarterback spot, just to be able to stand in the pocket and throw the football.

"We hit him as many times as we could hit him and he just kept getting up and making plays. He completed a 13-yard pass left-handed against us once. I remember just standing on the sideline shaking my head, going, 'I don't know what we have to do to stop him.' He's a competitor. He's accurate. So I'm excited about that."

Mahalo. Unfortunately, we won't see you again until the Maui Invitational in '14.

Anyway, it seems like Philly & KC are downplaying the possibility of a trade. I'm sure they'll likely settle on the 1st pick of the 2nd round (or KC's 3rd + a late-round pick).

    Nick making some noise...

"At the end of the day, I'm not here to be a backup," Foles said. "I'm here to be the guy. I don't think we play this game to sit on the bench. We play it to play, and I'm here to play."

Nick Foles fires shot in QB battle: 'I'm here to play'

We all remember that Matt Scott was the guy and Nick eventually took it from him. I bet we see the same thing here.

    Cleared to Play...

"PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Nick Foles has been cleared, and will practice today with the Eagles.

Foles suffered a concussion in the Eagles loss to the Cowboys, and according to NFL policy must be cleared by an independent neurologist.

Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmer says Foles and Matt Barkley will split reps at Tuesday’s practice."
