  • Arizona-Utah Player Evaluations

    Ezra Amacher

    Kevin Parrom, A

While it is to soon to proclaim that KP is back, his play against Utah was very encouraging. The junior forward who has been through so much over the past half year scored 12 points, nine of which came from behind the arc. Parrom is still struggling a little bit with ball handling and doesn't have enough strength yet to drive to the hoop but as long as he keeps making his jumpers, he will be receiving a good amount of playing time.

    Kyle Fogg, B+

When things were getting really rough, Foggy came through with back to back huge three pointers that helped the Cats separate themselves from Utah. Fogg made four of seven field goals but the most impressive aspect of his game were his six assists. If only he could play this well every game, Arizona would be in a lot better shape.

    Josiah Turner, B+

Josey had another solid game, scoring 10 points and getting two assists and steals. Each game, he is becoming more and more consistent and tonight was no exception as he was able to cut down on his turnovers while still running the floor the way you would expect from a point guard of his caliber.

    Jordin Mayes, B

Mayes had a very quiet eight points tonight but he scored a couple big baskets including a three pointer that pretty much sealed an Arizona with five minutes left in the game. It had been a long time since Mayes had a decent shooting night but maybe he is now breaking out of a very long slump. Along with three made field goals, Mayes also had two assists and a steal.

    Angelo Chol, B-

It is still a mystery why Chol is not getting more playing time than he does. Tonight, Chol was on the court for 10 minutes but in that time he scored four points, got a couple rebounds and blocked a shot. Chol is improving every day and by next year, he will hopefully be getting more action, even if he has greater competition.

    Nick Johnson, C+

Bunnies had a very up and down performance. He scored 11 points thanks to three treys and it was great to see his shot go down after a drought where nothing seemed to be falling. However, the freshman guard also committed a team high four turnovers including some that led directly to Utah points. Johnson is still adapting but he has to cut down on the unnecessary drives and passes or else he will keep turning the ball over, resulting in less playing time.

    Brendon Lavender, C

Blav had a tough night shooting, making two of his six three pointers, and one of those came in the final minutes of the game when the outcome was already decided. On a positive note, Lavender is now getting a solid 15-20 minutes of playing time each game and more times than not, he will make his time on the court count.

    Jesse Perry, C

Once again, Perry had trouble scoring the ball, as he went 3-8 from the field. He did get 10 rebounds, two steals, and a block so overall it wasn't too bad of a game for the senior forward but Perry's scoring slump is really hurting Arizona. He is their best option inside and is going to need step up when the Cats play some of the tougher games on their schedule in the upcoming weeks.

    Solomon Hill, Incomplete

Under two minutes into the second half, Solo got ejected for elbowing a Utah player. The replay didn't show anything that was very malicious but the refs called it a flagrant two foul. Before his ejection, Hill had only made 1-7 field goals and didn't have the energy one would expect from a player who was supposed to be the leader on the team. And while he probably didn't deserve to get ejected, it was still not a smart choice to throw an elbow. If all goes well, Hill will not be suspended for any additional time.

I give Solo an F, he clearly nailed the guy on purpose, he deserved to ejected, I am just proud of our guys for responding and blowing out Utah!

I agree that the referees had to eject Solo, but could not convince myself either way that it was accidental or intentional after watching all the replays.

That was not accidental, he raised his arm (even appeared to make a fist) and decked him.

Summer cat you need to understand difference between intentional aggression and attempting to move in front of the other player assertively. No malicious behavior at all, just plain assertive basketball.

Nice summary again Ezra. I agree on Chol needing more playing time.

Once he starts moving his feet better, then he won't get so many reaching-in fouls and he will be better positioned for the blocks. The weak side needs to be ready to rotate and cover Chol's man when this happens. I would love us to attempt the feed to the low post at least every once in a while when he is in the game.
